Dirty Dozen Fridays Writing Prompt

Set your timer and for the next fifteen minutes and write something using these twelve words. The order of the words can be switched around as necessary. The choice of whether you write fiction or non-fiction is up to you. And don’t use all the words in the first paragraph.

  • flood
  • lipstick
  • striped
  • homocide
  • spaghetti
  • auburn
  • pragmatic
  • chevron
  • blazer
  • lime
  • controlling
  • porcelain

Do not use them all in one paragraph either! Spread them out — one per paragraph (or page) would be a nice challenge.

  1. Hey. Just thought I’d share what I did with this prompt today. I wrote and then edited it into a poem. Here it is:

    Here it comes again,
    The flood of memories,
    Lapping around my ankles.
My hair swishing around like coils of auburn spaghetti.
    It’s slowly rising to
    Cover my mouth; then nose.
I always knew you’d be the death of me.

    I don’t struggle.
    I know there’s no escape.
Your pragmatic ways even extend to homicide,
    Controlling every sense,
    Dominating my whimsies.

Have they given you your blazer yet?
    Welcomed you into their club?
You’ll look dashing in it, the sleeve striped with a chevron.
They shall surely greet you with open arms.
Then I’ll have helped you get everything you wanted.

    Can’t seem to forget me?
(Funny, you used to be pretty good at it.)
People say I’m hard to forget,
Must have something to do with the lime-green lipstick.
It’s a blessing in disguise, now though,
You can’t see my lips turn blue.

As the water creeps into my lungs, I know
I was nothing more than a pawn to you,
    Your porcelain doll.
I see light behind my heavy eyelids.
You’ve abandoned me – too old for dolls anymore –
As I drown in our memories.
