Lacy Trim Knit Jacket Review

Babe Hope, author, blogger, and stylist at Ulla Popken (and fellow twitter addict), contacted me a few weeks ago to review a few items from Ulla Popken’s plus size clothing line. If you are not familiar with Ulla Popken, they have been making clothes for plus size women since 1987. But it has been a family business much longer. They currently dress the curves of women sizes 12 to 34.

Knit Tank and Lacy Jacket

Today I went for a haircut and decided to wear two of the pieces from Ulla Popken. The Viscose Knit Tank and the Lace Trim Knit Jacket.

They are individually sold pieces that were meant to be worn together or separate. The knit jacket is $69 and the knit tank is $44. When you buy both together you save $10. Both pieces are available in the slate blue shown here, winterberry and dark grey.
For my appointment I wore them with my boot cut Lane Bryant jeans, Payless motorcycle boots, and Naturalizer handbag. As you may have guessed this photo is post haircut.

The viscose material is soft to touch and I love the fit. Both the tank and jacket are comfortable with no pulling or yanking required all day. The jacket has an a-line to it so it is very accommodating for my hips.

A Little Work for Upkeep

I washed these pieces in the washer on the delicate cycle. When they arrived they had a strong smell from being in the plastic packaging. It is completely gone now that they are washed. They washed nicely and look as good as they did when they went in. The down side is they had to lie flat to dry to maintain their shape and I had to press them.

Interesting Texture Details

I love the pintuck gathers at the breast which continue part way onto the top of the back. It is such a flattering detail and so nice to see that they thought about what it would like from behind.

The lace is an important part of the overall look of the jacket and has a bit of weight to it. As you can see, the viscose knit wrinkles a bit with sitting but doesn’t destroy the overall look of the piece.

Durability May Be an Issue

Unfortunately the lace has not held up completely for the first day of wear. In a few spots I noticed the lace is pulling apart from itself. There is no logical reason for it. I have not been yanking on it nor had it catch on anything. Other than the issue with the lace it is a well sewn product with no stray threads and clean seams.

Despite the lace, the top has a casual look to it and I think this color (slate blue) looks best with jeans but any twill pant or skirt would work too. It is heavy enough for fall but I can still see me trying to fit the pieces either individually or together with my summer wardrobe. That being said, $113 seems a bit pricey to me for these pieces.
