What You Want From Fashion
During the month of November the main entry for the Five Favorite Things blog giveaway was to leave a comment on “what you want from the plus size fashion world”. There were many great responses and I want to thank everyone who took the time to comment. I also wanted to share their responses with the blog readers who might not have seen the comments and other new visitors this week. It’s other to see what other women in our size range are having problems with. Have a gander at what plus size women want from fashion and if you think of something they missed please add it in the comments.
- From the Plus Sized Fashion World, I would love longer structured jackets and tops! Being a larger woman doesn’t mean that all of our clothing has to be “boxy”. Give me some long long sleeves with some flair to wear under a great structured longer denim jacket! (Anne Taylor)
- What I want from the plus-size fashion world: extended sizing, covering up to 6X; extended choices and right now, I’m craving longer shirts in general, at least 34″ long. (Diana)
- I want sexy tops (no more t-shirts) that are not sleeveless and that flow over the belly.(Jill Moran)
- I would like to see more plus-size clothing in PETITE LENGTHS! We can be cute even if we are short and plus-sized! 🙂 Especially skirts, please! Thanks! (Amy S.)
- I want more cute dresses like this! (Emma)
- I’d love more clothes for girls who are bigger on top and smaller on the bottom! (Jenny)
- What I want from the plus size fashion world – I want clothes with the right proportions. I don’t understand how sometimes, I’ll try to get a simple t-shirt or something and… 1) the neck hole will be GAPINGLY large (No, just because I’m a size 24, doesn’t mean my neck’s a 24, too…)
2) If it’s a long-sleeve shirt, the sleeves will be WAY too short (I’ve experienced this, even in up-scale stores. What’s with stores thinking that just being I’m fat, I have short arms? ) 3) the length will either be unflattering too long (You get the tent effect…) or way too short (doesn’t cover the belly when you lift your arms.) Also – more lingerie, please! Plus-size body doesn’t necessarily equal plus size boobays! Where’re my 50b bras in cute styles and prints?! (Wendy) - I want better fashion for petite. I don’t want a shirt that looks like a dress just so it can fit me. The sleeves are always way too long as well. (Huguette English)
- I want tailored, we.l made and affordable clothing made for the different ares of my life (i.e. work, weekend, outdoor, black tie) in the same-up-to-date styles and trends as traditional straight sized clothing. I’m tired of finding sweaters, blouses, and tops that only come in 3/4-sleeve lengths. What? A big girl doesn’t want covering for her forearms? I want the same sparkly, sexy, sophisticated options as every other woman without having to travel to the far distances to get it. (brooklynshoebabe)
- I would love to find a suit that doesn’t make me look like a football player. (Kate)
- I would love to see more cute and sexy plus size lingerie! (Gabby)
- I want affordable fashions that are sexy but not slutty. It seems like there is often either hideous patterns and moo moos or shiny latex and mini skirts. cant we have something in the middle?? (Amanda)
- More beautiful patterns. (Still Redheaded)
- Non matronly and non slutty skirts. It seems the great majority fall into one of those two categories. (Karina)
- I would love fashionable, figure flattering clothing. I often walk into a store that I know carries plus-sizes and see fun outfits in the regular sizes that I know would look great on me to find out that they didn’t make the same outfit in plus-size. (Pam R.)
- Jackets! My jackets never fit right in the right places. Never! (Stephanie)
- I’d love to see more fitted separates with colorful prints and skirts that can sit high on the waist and be long enough on our legs. (Rebecca)
- I’d love to see lines carry up to US 32 in stores! Too many plus lines stop around a US 22-26. More structure and detail in clothing. I’m often surprised at the comparison between the level of detail when comparing straight sized clothing to plus. We don’t need jersey tents! (Nicole)
- I would love to see better descriptions of how clothing fits at the online plus clothing stores. I live in the middle of nowhere and always am hesitant about to order b/c of the hassle if it might not fit. For example, I really like how LucieLu has comments from the models on how something fits (i.e. if a shirt runs small). Or if maybe they listed the bra size of the woman modeling the clothing, so we could look at the picture and gauge how the clothing might sit on us. (Pegs)
- I want to see more structured pieces from the plus size fashion industry. How much stretchy & flowy can we wear! I need more modern prints as well. But over all I do feel the plus fashion industry is progressing, baby steps! (Cid)
- I would love to see longer shirts. All the stores around me have larger shirts but they are all short. I like them longer because it makes me feel better. (Amy Brewer)
- I want shirts that cover the arms! And are actually long enough to cover my stomach so I don’t have to worry. (Suzanne Culp-Veldpaus)
- What do I want to see? Plus size clothes that don’t look like curtains from the 70′s… I know I’m a bigger girl, but why do the “nice” tops have to make me look even bigger?! (Erin)
- I want more for the short plus size ladies. (shercole)
- I’m a large T-shape and I find that shoulder/sleeves are always too tight. I would like to get some clothes that flatter my T-Shape and look more fitted to my body – Made to measure styles kind of outfits is what I would love to wear. Not that parachute look. (Lisa G)
- Please , no 3/4 length sleeves…Who think that looks good on big arms? Please , a great pair of jeans! (Deborah Stawiarski)
- I want my plus size fashion to be stylish; not frumpy and boring!! I want style, access and affordability!!! (Tina Renee)
- I want more fitted dresses that have some room in the chest area. they never give enough room for the chest. Also, I’m sick of giant patterns. We don’t all like huge flowers on our clothes. (Diana Gervits)
- The plus size fashion world needs better choices! I am tired of seeing the same shirt made out of cheap fabric at every store I go to. I am also having the hardest time finding wedding dresses the are casual and actually look good on my plus size frame! (Cat)
- I want more ATTRACTIVE options such as this dress. Sure clothes fit but that doesn’t meant they are attractive and stylish! (Dee)
- My mother-in-law is a plus size & I find it difficult to purchase things for her that are stylish & that don’t look like a sack. I’d like to see a bit more shape to plus size clothing. (Julie)
- I’d like to see more plus size petites–my mother is a plus and a petite and I love to buy her clothes but they are hard to find! (Callie)
- I just want better quality clothing that looks just as nice/cute/sexy as the regular lines. (Tara D)
- I want clothes that have a nice fit and are fashionable not loose, baggy clothes. (Mia J)
- I would like clothes with shapes and clothes that fit without looking like you are wearing your Grandmothers clothes at 30!!! Why does the fashion industry think if you have a larger hiney that you don’t have a waist? AND pants don’t have to be all elastic! (Paula Wyatt)
- As my old granny used to say, I don’t want to look like Aunt Hippy Hog when I’m wearing a big dress! (Lynda E.)
- How about well made plus size clothes that don’t cost a fortune. I’m tired of cheap fabrics and construction . (Michelle Jadaa)
- I want more variety. Most of the time it seems like our only choices are very conservative stuff or very casual stuff. Fun and classy things like the pictured dress are a rarity in plus size fashion! (Claire)
- Longer tops more fashion forward this season please not ten years ago (Shell Hale)
- I want cute jeans! (Susan C.)
- I’d like to see more plus sized clothes that look like their smaller counter parts. Also why do they always think big woman love sequins, glitter and kitties/puppies on shirts & blouses? Also I’d love to see more extended sizes and for them to also be in tall. As a big girl who is just shy of 6′ this is a must. Also panties in bigger sizes. And not all big woman have big breasts, b cups untie and maybe we can find some bras. I don’t need d cups but the b cups I find always are to small around and I hate adding a bunch of extenders. Also my shoulders are sadly line backer size so i can’t find bra’s that fit over my big shoulders, arg! (Wendy)
- I want the plus sized world to stop using cheap fabrics. (Jen)
- I’d like even more military designs. A lot of the ones that have come out for plus size are too flowy for something that is typically “harsh” and “stern” in design. I want a plus size military look that looks fairly tough. (Vicky H.)
- I would like a dress that doesn’t make me look like my grandmothers curtains in her living room. I would like to be sassy and sexy! (R.Mueller)
- I would like to see younger, more form flattering clothes. Not flowers and tshirts!
- Thanks for the chance. (Monique Rizzo)
- I want more colors, patterns, and textures. I want younger looking clothes, and clothes for the office that I don’t have to squeeze into. Winter coats with a bit of give around the waist and shoulders. Winter ski pants in all colors! Cute panties in all cuts! Beautiful, sexy bras..not the old white matronly ones… LOL… Christmas dresses that don’t look like a smock, and Halloween costumes in all sizes…and bigger belts to fit around my waist. (Christine D.)
- I just want clothing that makes me feel sexy!!! (Marlene V.)
- I want to see a nice, reasonable priced button down shirt that fits someone besides an A cup. (S Carter)
- I want more clothes that are big on top & big around the bottom but that actually show you have a waist. I have to walk around in belted tents half the time!! (Patricia B.)
- I want clothes that do not look like tents, most plus size clothes have no definition what so ever! Thanks for the chance! (Angela)
- I like classic styles that are designed for a fuller figure – don’t make us look like refrigerator boxes! (Kimbly)
- One thing I’d like are longer tops that cover the tummy. Also classic clothes, not so many large prints. thanks. (Pamela S.)
- Better proportioned clothing, for one thing…and more subtly sexy clothing. It seems like I can find prairie-wear or ho-tastic stuff, but finding things in between can be a true challenge. (Cricket)
- What I want are clothes that look good on MY body. That’s it. I don’t want to be wearing something that my mother would be wearing. I want something fashionable that looks good. It’s gotten better since I was in my teens, but it could get even better than what it is. (Michelle Tucker)
- I would love to see more cute dresses, not tents that look like maternity wear. (Kimberly)
- I would like a larger selection of clothes from the plus size industry! (Susan Smoaks)
- More variety and easier access would be great! It would be nice to see a lot more plus size stores in the malls. (Amber Y.)
Lagenlook. I found this style on ebay several years ago. It started in Germany and means “layered” look. There are some pretty good definitions if you google lagenlook, too. Basically it’s a clothing shape that’s like a teardrop, with asymmetrical seams, wide legged pants and tiered skirts. I buy as much of this stuff as I can afford, and it now has 11 pages of clothing running. Usually 3 pieces: cropped top, or longer tunic top, an under that layer, usually different color and assymetrical and the long bottom. With all these tiers and seams it’s very hard to tell where the body contours are ( my idea of heaven). Go have a look.
