Jay Manuel for Lane Bryant

You may or may not know Jay Manuel from America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). Of course he had a life long before this top modeling series as a make-up artist, photographer, and model. In this stage of his life he talks a lot about fashion either on his own shows for the Style network or E! Recently he made the rounds talking about Lane Bryant fashions as their “brand ambassador”.
Now I love Jay, really I do (he was one of my favorite things about ANTM), but honestly, what does he know about being plus size or shopping for plus size clothes? First he is the farthest thing from plus size and well, he is a guy. Let’s find out shall we:
On Access Hollywood he talks about trends like houndstooth patterns, corduroy, denim, playing with layers, tunic dresses, and color blocking.

On BET’s 106 he talks about dressing around our body proportions by color blocking with prints (houndstooth), ponte fabric, belts, ruching, and keeping accessories minimal. A few of the same pieces appear from the first video.

On WPIX NYC morning news Jay is in the thick of fashion week as he talks about all women embracing fashion. Again the houndstooth shirt is featured (you can bet this item will go fast!), pencil skirts and I absolutely love the jeans with the tweed jacket. He mentions Lane Bryant’s latest T3 firm and hold jeans technology.

In this final clip Jay visits KCAL-LA to talk about Lane Byrant’s re-branding (classic looks on trend). He talks high-waists, pops of color, corduroy, opaque tights, jewel tones, flare pants. Again, some of the similar pieces appear as above but changed up slightly with different accessories.

What I like about these videos, is while Jay may talk about dressing for your body type he does not make it an issue of looking smaller but looking good no matter what your size. His focus is on looking taller and longer. So what do you think, did Jay do a good job representing plus size women?

In honor of the Golden Globe Award I thought I would pick an evening gown for today. The Red Formal Plus Dress from PromGirl definitely fits the bill (and Valentine’s Day is coming too). It is available in sizes 14 to 32 for $310. Don’t like red (how could you not!) there is also hot…

  • White Maxi Dress

I absolutely love the new white “classic maxi dress” from Sealed with a Kiss. They have it listed as an evening gown but it is too casual looking for that. It’s definitely a beautiful summer day dress that could be dressed up or down with accessories. I’d love it with a ruffed up denim jacket…

  • The Navy Maxi Dress

I love everything about the Vivian Plus Size Maxi Dress from Igigi; beginning with its navy base, to its bright blue accent that surrounds the arms and waist, to shallow scoop neck style that is guaranteed to keep my bra covered. Since the model is 5’10” I am assuming the length would also create a…

  • Accent Patterns

I can really appreciate accent patterns. There is something to be said for being a minimalist. Accent patterns are visually stimulating without being over powering and they give a little hint of excitement below the surface. What do I consider an accent pattern? Anything that provides a touch of contrast on an otherwise solid shade…
